Reference date. For years under the Income-tax Act, 1961 it is the end of the relevant assessment year (for AY 2025-26, 31 March 2026). For tax year 2026-27 onwards under the Income-tax Act, 2025 it is the end of the financial year succeeding the tax year (for tax year 2026-27, 31 March 2028). In both cases the updated return can be filed for up to 48 months after that date.

When an updated return is not the right route

  • The revised-return window is still open. For AY 2026-27 a revised return can be filed until 31 March 2027, and for tax year 2026-27 until 31 March 2028. Revising costs no additional tax, although a late-revision fee may apply.
  • The correction reduces tax or increases a refund. An updated return cannot do this.
  • Other exclusions in section 139(8A) and section 263(6)(c) apply, for example where assessment or reassessment for that year is pending or completed, or an updated return has already been filed.

See revised and updated returns after Finance Act 2026 for the full rules.

Assumptions this calculator makes

  • You enter the tax and interest yourself; the calculator does not compute them.
  • If you filed an original return, the window that must close first is the revised-return window: 31 December of the assessment year for years before AY 2026-27, and 31 March at the end of the assessment year (1961 Act) or of the financial year after the tax year (2025 Act) from AY 2026-27 onwards, as amended by the Finance Act, 2026. If you filed no return, it is the belated-return window, which ends on 31 December after the year.
  • Interest already paid with the earlier return is deducted from the total payable. Section 267(3)(b) of the 2025 Act words this deduction against the additional income tax; the total payable is the same either way, but the split in your return form may differ.

Frequently asked questions

What is the additional tax on an updated return filed within one year?

25% of the aggregate of tax and interest payable, if filed after the revised or belated return window has closed and within 12 months of the reference date.

How long do I have to file an updated return?

Up to 48 months from the end of the relevant assessment year (1961 Act years) or from the end of the financial year succeeding the tax year (2025 Act years).

Is the late filing fee subject to the additional tax?

No. The percentage applies to the aggregate of tax and interest; any fee is paid on top.

What changed in the Finance Act, 2026?

An updated return may now be filed in response to a reassessment notice within the time in the notice, with a further 10% of tax and interest payable.
