Card status — Product has changed: Kotak has changed the 811 #DreamDifferent into a Fixed Deposit-secured card paying 2% cashback, with a Rs 500 (incl. GST) joining fee from 1 September 2026 (checked 30 September 2026). Issuer source

Quick verdict: The Kotak 811 #DreamDifferent Credit Card is best for building credit against a Kotak Fixed Deposit. It earns 2% cashback in billing cycles with Rs 15,000+ spend (capped at Rs 500 a cycle), with no annual fee and a Rs 500 (incl. GST) joining fee from 1 September 2026. Its cashback is secondary: 2% applies only in billing cycles with Rs 15,000 or more of eligible spend, which on a small FD-backed limit means high utilisation, so treat it first as a credit-building card; see Our Analysis below.

Overview

The Kotak 811 #DreamDifferent is now a secured credit card issued against a Kotak Fixed Deposit (minimum FD Rs 10,000), with no income proof or credit score needed. It pays 2% cashback on eligible spends, including UPI, in billing cycles where you spend Rs 15,000 or more, plus fuel and railway surcharge waivers.

There is no annual fee, but from 1 September 2026 Kotak charges a Rs 500 (incl. GST) joining fee, so it is no longer free to join. It suits people building or rebuilding a credit history.

Our Analysis: A Credit-Building Card With a Cashback Threshold

Issuer factstated in the issuer’s own documentsCalculationour arithmetic on those factsAssumptionan input we chose, not an issuer figureOur analysisour judgement

Our analysisThis card’s main job is to give someone without income proof or a credit history a card backed by their own fixed deposit. The cashback is a second layer, and it switches on only above Rs 15,000 of eligible spend in a billing cycle, which is a large amount relative to the limits many FD holders will have.

1. The fee

  • Issuer factFrom 1 September 2026 the joining fee is Rs 424 + GST (Key Fact Statement), shown on Kotak’s FAQ as Rs 500 including GST, with no waiver. There is no annual fee. A Rs 170 cancellation fee applies if the card is cancelled within 90 days of issue.
  • Issuer factKotak’s product page also shows “No joining fee – limited period offer” and a “lifetime free” page title. We follow the Key Fact Statement; if that offer applies to you, the fee-recovery figure below does not.
  • CalculationRs 424 × 1.18 = Rs 500.32. At the threshold (Rs 300 of cashback a cycle) it takes 2 qualifying cycles to recover; one cycle at the Rs 500 cap leaves it Rs 0.32 short.

2. The threshold, the caps and the conditions

  • Issuer fact2% cashback, worked out on each eligible transaction, in any billing cycle with at least Rs 15,000 of eligible spend. Caps: Rs 500 a cycle in total, Rs 200 a cycle on UPI, and Rs 100 a transaction. UPI earns cashback only when paid through the Kotak811 app, not through third-party UPI apps.
  • Issuer factThe programme applies from billing cycles starting in September 2026. Cashback for a cycle is given only if the minimum amount due on the previous statement was paid through Kotak’s mobile banking app or net banking, and you must hold a Kotak savings account. It becomes available by the 15th of the following month; Kotak811 savings-account holders must claim it in the Kotak811 app within 30 days, while other Kotak savings-account holders receive it directly. It is forfeited if the card or the 811 account is closed, suspended or frozen, or dues are overdue.
  • Issuer factExcluded from eligible spend: wallet loads, fuel, rent, ATM withdrawals, EMI transactions, gaming apps, gold, insurance, money transfers and other listed merchant codes.
  • CalculationThe Rs 500 cap is reached at Rs 25,000 of eligible spend, the UPI cap at Rs 10,000 of UPI spend, and the per-transaction cap on any single purchase above Rs 5,000.

3. Fixed deposit, credit limit and utilisation

  • Issuer factThe fixed deposit must be at least Rs 10,000 (tenure of 181 days or more) and can go up to Rs 20,00,000. The credit limit can be up to 90% of the FD, and the FD keeps earning interest. Kotak’s own page advises keeping utilisation below 30% of the limit.
  • CalculationSpending the Rs 15,000 threshold in a cycle uses this share of the limit:
FD amountCredit limit (up to 90%)Threshold as a share of the limit
Rs 10,000Rs 9,000167%
Rs 25,000Rs 22,50067%
Rs 50,000Rs 45,00033%
Rs 1,00,000Rs 90,00017%
  • CalculationKeeping Rs 15,000 within 30% of the limit needs a limit of Rs 50,000, which means an FD of about Rs 55,556. At the minimum FD, the limit of Rs 9,000 is below the threshold itself.
  • Our analysisFor the credit-building use the card is designed for, chasing the cashback threshold on a small FD works against Kotak’s own utilisation advice. Treat the cashback as a bonus for larger FDs, not as a reason to spend more.

4. Cashback in one billing cycle, at different spend levels

AssumptionThese amounts were chosen by us to show the threshold and caps. They are not averages. We assume all spend is eligible, no single purchase exceeds Rs 5,000, the previous minimum due was paid through Kotak’s digital channels, and the cashback is claimed in time.

PatternSpend in the cycle (card / UPI via Kotak811)CashbackRate on that spend
Just under the thresholdRs 14,999 / Rs 0Rs 00.00%
At the thresholdRs 15,000 / Rs 0Rs 3002.00%
Mixed card and UPIRs 10,000 / Rs 10,000Rs 4002.00%
At the capRs 25,000 / Rs 0Rs 5002.00%
Well above the capRs 40,000 / Rs 0Rs 5001.25%

CalculationOne rupee below the threshold, a cycle earns nothing; at the threshold it earns Rs 300. Above Rs 25,000 the rate falls, to 1.25% at Rs 40,000.

5. Who it suits, and when a different card fits better

  • Our analysisIt suits people building or rebuilding a credit history who have no income proof but can place a fixed deposit, and who will pay the full statement every month.
  • Our analysisThe cashback is realistic mainly for those with a larger FD (around Rs 55,000 or more) and regular spending of Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 a cycle.
  • Our analysisAnyone who already qualifies for an unsecured card on income may get more value from a card without an FD lock-in or a spend threshold.

CalculationMethod: the joining fee includes 18% GST (Rs 424 × 1.18). Cashback rate = cashback in the cycle ÷ spend in the cycle. Limit = 90% of the FD, the maximum Kotak states. Rates, caps and fees come from the issuer documents listed below; the spend levels are assumptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Kotak 811 lifetime free?

There is no annual fee, but from 1 September 2026 Kotak charges a Rs 500 joining fee (including GST), so it is no longer free to join.

What is a reward point worth?

The card now pays cashback instead of reward points: 2% in billing cycles with Rs 15,000 or more of spend, capped at Rs 500 per cycle.

Does it have a welcome benefit?

Kotak does not list a welcome benefit for the current FD-secured version; its value comes from 2% cashback and surcharge waivers.

Before You Apply

Cashback needs Rs 15,000 of eligible spend in a billing cycle, stops at Rs 500 (Rs 200 on UPI paid through the Kotak811 app), is given only if the previous minimum due was paid through Kotak’s own digital channels, and needs a Kotak savings account (Kotak811 account holders must claim it within 30 days). The credit limit is up to 90% of the linked FD, so the threshold is a large share of a small limit. Pay each statement in full: interest on a carried balance can quickly exceed the cashback earned.
